Financial Assistance

Older adults and people with disabilities who have low income and need help with basic living expenses may qualify for financial assistance programs to help with the costs associated with food, housing, insurance, and more.

Maryland Human Services Benefits Network

MD THINK is an integrated portal to available health and human services in Maryland, allowing residents a single point of entry to search for benefits they may be eligible for, including food, cash, medical cost, and energy bill programs across state agencies.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI provides monthly payments to eligible people age 65 and over or who have a disability. To be considered for SSI benefits, the person must have low income with few assets, and the disability must be expected to last for at least 12 months.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

Social Security Disability provides monthly payments to people with a disability who are unable to work.

Temporary Disability Assistance Program (TDAP)

TDAP is designed to provide income (generally up to $185 per month) to an individual with a disability who has no dependent children. The program is applied for through the Department of Social Services.

Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit

This program allows credits against the homeowner’s property tax bill if the property taxes exceed a fixed percentage of the person’s gross income, limiting the amount of property taxes homeowners must pay.

Renters' Tax Credit

This program provides property tax credits for eligible renters to offset the cost of the portion of their rent that is assumed to be attributable to property taxes paid by the owner. Combined income from the total household is calculated to determine if the legal leaseholder qualifies for this credit.
