Equipment and Technology

Programs that offer free medical equipment and assistive technology can help reduce barriers to independent living, communicating with others, and mobility. Maryland has many resources to help people of all ages and abilities remain safe at home and connected to their communities through free equipment and technology programs.

Durable Medical Equipment

The Maryland Durable Medical Re-Use (DME) Center provides free durable medical equipment to Marylanders with any illness, injury, or disability, regardless of age or insurance coverage. Assistive Devices and Technology

Marylanders who need technology or devices to help with communicating or activities of daily living can access a range of supports through the Maryland High-Tech Assistive Technology Reuse Center. Products offered are free and include adapted computer equipment, speech communication devices, eye-gaze systems, and other communications and environmental supports.

Communications Equipment

The Maryland Accessible Telecommunications (MAT) program provides free telecommunications equipment to eligible Maryland residents who need help making or receiving phone calls. Tools provided include amplified and captioned phones, tablets, braille teletypewriters, wheelchair pad phone switches, and other communications products.

Portable Ramp Loans

The Maryland Department of Disabilities' Assistive Technology Program has partnered with centers for independent living across the state to make available a variety of portable ramps to consumers who need short-term solutions for getting in and out of their homes. Ramps are typically loaned for up to 120 days (4 months) and are fully compliant with ADA requirements for portable ramp access.

Other Resources

Other programs to help Marylanders with supportive medical equipment and assistive technology may be available. For example:

Assistive Technology and Services program helps Marylanders with developmental disabilities gain access to assistive technology and services to help with several activities of daily living. The waiver program also includes an assessment of needs and assistance in locating and using assistive tech.

Assistive Technology Low-Interest Loan Program offers low-interest loans to help finance assistive equipment and accessibility modifications to homes and vehicles, and for the purchase of adapted and non-adapted vehicles.
