Nursing facilities offer 24-hour nursing care and assistance for people with complex medical needs who cannot live independently.

A directory of licensed nursing homes in Maryland can be found on the Maryland Department of Health’s Office of Health Care Quality site.

Paying for Services

Medicare only covers rehabilitation for short nursing facility stays after a hospitalization. Nursing home care can be paid for privately, with long term care insurance, commercial insurance for rehabilitation, or veterans’ benefits. Medical Assistance – also called Medicaid – pays for certain eligible individuals who cannot afford to pay for the full cost.

Medicaid also offers eligible individuals services that can help you transition out of a nursing home and into a home or community setting. Visit the Medicaid page to learn more or contact your local Maryland Access Point office.

Advocating For Nursing Home Rights

Maryland Long-Term Care Ombudsmen are advocates for residents of nursing homes, board and care homes, assisted living facilities and similar adult care facilities. They work to resolve problems of individual residents and to bring about changes that will improve residents’ care and quality of life. Contact your local Ombudsman to learn about residents’ rights and other ways in which they may be of assistance. Learn more and access a contact list of providers below.
